Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

It's funny to me when people ask me what I have for "pets" and I'll say I have two pups and a cat, people ask what kind of dogs, I say Rotts. Then I'll include I keep snakes.

The faces I get are priceless. I lovingly call my dogs baby killers to people I'm friends with who know my girls (they're the sweetest dogs I've ever had) and their reaction is "ROTTWEILERS AND SNAKES? ARE YOU NUTS? WHAT WILL YOU DO WHEN THEY ALL GET BIG?!"

Nope. Just have a big heart for awkward, misrepresented animals. Snakes get handled when someone else is home and my pups are well socialized.

People should be more afraid of my cat

Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

A six foot long Kingsnake wrapped around your neck could be very difficult to remove without using force that would hurt the animal. After my posts on the taser, I walked in a store and saw one of those "zapper" flyswatters, and remember a friend that touched one. He jumped like a frog on a hotplate and it was soooo funny. Something like that may work. But after seeing the big snakes that Tom has, it would probably just turn them on.
I could just see the police report and resulting news report...
"Man killed by horny snake...they don't know what spurred the accident...but the snake seem quite pleased by the experience."

Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

This a great post, thank you to everybody for your answers, and comments, specially to tory, for starting this useful thread.
I've never though about a plan, my only big snake (8 ft boa) is in my office, so I follow the 6 feet rule and never let him wrap around my back, but I never considered explain my cousin about the alcohol or the hot water if anything happens.
In my home is another story; my wife doesn't like snakes, she enters in the snake room watches sometimes when I'm cleaning but never when feeding (she can't stand rats or mice) she supports me when one is added to the collection; but this thread opened my eyes because my burm is getting bigger, and my albino boa will grow some day so I will have to tell her about an emergency plan.

Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

I hate to say it but your wife is gonna have to learn to "get over it" when that burm gets larger... you will need help with the burm... my burm was a very calm girl, but in her cage she always thought she was getting fed and wouldn't think twice about your hand being food if she had the chance... when she was out she was wonderful... I and some friends assisted very young children in holding her tail or petting her and she was always very tolerant about being in public... but a burm is a very large snake and even though I knew that when she was out there was a very slim chance of anything bad happening, I ALWAYS had my husband or a friend in the snake room while her cage was getting cleaned or I was feeding her, etc... it only takes one time for something to happen on accident... better to be safe then sorry you need to make sure she is comfortable handling the snakes and in anything she would possibly need to do in the event of a bite or wrap.

I have 2 main ppl that help me. my hubby, who is comfortable handling most of the snakes and knows that if I get bit by something small I'll expect him to either grab some alcohol, listerine or just wait until the snake let's go, lol. and if one of the large snakes were to wrap he knows to start from the tail and unwrap as quickly as he can. I'll deal with the bite as ling as I'm not being choked out LOL. he also knows never to try to pull a snakes mouth off of what it's biting.

crystal also helps with the snakes and will be my main help while Ryan is deployed. she has large snake experience as well, as well as already having worked with my personal animals. she knows the protocol better then Ryan lol. and also knows not to panic in the event of a bite or wrap.

experience is always good but being knowledgable, having a plan and keeping your head cool in event of something happening is key... the physical size of a person could mean leas if they have the proper knowledge of what to do

Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

Well as far as protection goes, I don't have to worry. First...the biggest snake I have is a Dumerils boa, and she is not that big. Second...I watched Kill Bill and have been able to master the "Five-point-palm-exploding-heart technique."

Watch out big snake....

Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

I won't even hold a big snake at a show. I am the same way with big dogs always asking if the dog is friendly, however...I don't bother asking about the huge burm....I just won't hold it.
I think the two person rule is good, but would also offer that a face mask would be a good way to keep the strike from the face...assuming there would be a strike. That is the deal that scares me...the big head of a huge retic clamped over my face.
Here is the mask that I would use....

Of course you would run the risk that the snake would want you sexually, and at that point you would either have to be real kinky....or have three people.

What is it with you and snakes??? I mean, just how do you figure on smelling like a receptive female serpent, for a male snake to want you?

Its a joke...the part that was supposed to be humorous. See the mask looks like a snake, and so that is the potential attraction...get it? But who said anything about it being male? I would never want the male snake...but hey...if that's you deal.

Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

After working with retics and bloods for most of my adult life, I find boa constrictors very trustworthy..... They don't have those rapid mood changes that retics have...... and I've never had any of the big Surinames or Brazilians even attempt to bite..... it's always the smaller juveniles under 1 year that are bitey... Maybe I'm just lucky.... out of all 41 boas I have(bcc and bca)... not a single on has a nasty temperment.... a couple of them don't seem to like to be held.. but they are more flighty rather than aggressive///

I know there is no way to test this... but boa constrictors seem alot smarter than any python I've ever worked with.....

Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

My Dum seems to be the most least quirky snake I have ever had, and she seems to have this way about her that leads me to believe that she is very self aware. My pythons were cool too...but there is something about my boa that sets her apart...intelligence...well I don't know if she is smarter than say my Womas were.

Re: protection plan for larger boas, and handling them

i dunno about the retic thing... Haze my mainland is calmer then most of the other snakes I own... I've had her since she was 2 months old and shes had lots of handling since then... she's a big sweetie and let's me do whatever I need to with her... she's never offered a bite or had any split second weird moments or anything... one of the best animals i own...
