Water Snake
I recently was given a water snake that a friend of mine was giving way cause he got a job moving around a lot. I was told that he was feeding it earthworms every week. I looked up the care on them and that is where my question comes into play on how to take care of it...
I read that they need uv light then i read that they didnt. I read that they do eat earth worms and that they didnt...i read they needed a large bowl to be able to get in and then read differntly. i am not sure it seems that the pages contradicted each other except the fact that they do eat fish and temps are pretty much the same as corns and kings. So what I am asking is generally the basic care of them... ? I want to be able to provide the right care for the the little guy.
I appreciate any and all help I can get on this... Thanks a lot

Re: Water Snake
The first step is to identify the species. Please post some pics.

Re: Water Snake
Yes, please post pics. I've had many water snakes and never once fed them worms, so this is news to me.

Re: Water Snake
Most feed them frogs and fish, not sure if anyone has been successful switching to rodents. Not sure about the UV thing, never heard that myself. As far as earthworms, I'm sure you could feed them to him, but I don't see how they would provide enough nutrition. There are a few people on this site that keep these guys so I'm sure they will be able to give you some more exact advice. Cute little guy though

Re: Water Snake
That's a water snake, alright. Go with fish - that's what I used to feed mine until I got them switched over to rodents (you don't have to do that, I only did with mine because their poops with fish were just wretchedly nasty), usually they will go nuts over them, and I would think they provide more nutrition than worms. I don't see why he wouldn't do ok in the tub you've got him in, with a hide in there and a water dish. That's just a basic setup, but you could set him up with a regular 10 gallon/newspaper substrate/hide/water dish if you want him to be a display animal, and he'd be just fine. Temps can be in the high 70's to high 80's range. Make sure he's got a water dish large enough to soak in, but be careful - watch him forwater blistering, as water snakes (in my experience) will literally stay in their water 24/7 for periods of time.
That's what I have to offer, I'm sure there's someone on here with tons of experience with natricine snakes that can add more.

Re: Water Snake
I do appreciate the advice... right now the little guy seems to be in his waterdish about 50% of the time.
I will continue the fish diet and hopefully go to repticon next week and pick up some feeders and maybe get him switched on over.
Thanks again for the advice.

Re: Water Snake
No prob - don't be surprised if they don't take the mice at first, it takes time. I just rubbed fish scales and slime all over the mice...

Re: Water Snake
I actually tried that same process yesterday and it went pretty good. I picked up a frozen pink from a friend of mine...
I think in the long run it will be worth having him on mice...

Re: Water Snake
I love that snake!!! Man he is a good looking animal. I would make him a really cool cage with a pool full of fish in one end. That would be a blast to see him go after those fish.

Re: Water Snake
For what it is worth Ranger is a Florida Watersnake (Nerodia fasciata pictiventris).
Make sure the snake has an area where it can get completely dry. As Suad mentioned, scale rot can be a problem with captive watersnakes. It has been my experience that a substrate of artificial grass works well as it allows air circulation around the snake's venter (belly) allowing the snake to completely dry.
