Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
haha..... I'm actually just setting this 55 gallon up and toying with an idea. I have been collecting glassware at the thrift shop for 25 cents apiece.
I'm thinking of putting gravel in the vases and planting the plants in there instead of bottom gravel.
Easier to clean I'm guessing.... The water has been conditioning and today I go buy plants. Then I try to make up mind what type of fish. They ordered me in a pair of elephant noses, but I have changed mind about these guys because they need sand.

Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
I also put Pac #1 and Pac #2 together last night per instructions some one posted about pac breeding.
I really don't think it will work. They are REALLY mad at me.
But eggs should appear in 3-4 days so they won't have to put up with me making it rain on them for too much longer.

Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
You should NEVER house two crystal containers together in the same enclosure, ESPECIALLY if they are different species. They may "appear" to get along, but one could easily fall on the other one and break it.

I've actually been able to make it work, but I have to separate them at feeding time... and be careful about hook training! No tapping!

Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
Regarding breeding project #2 ( the pacs ) : It also says if you have only one male you may need to record another males call to get him in the mood.
If any one has a male Pac they could get to croak into the phone for me I would be most appreciative. My project may depend upon it !!!!

All the ones I've kept seemed to like "falling on each other"?!
And so far no one's gotten hurt...

Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
You're wrong, FM. The one of the left is an central american crystal ashtray. The tall fluted one is a burmese crystal vase. Do I have to post the picture of the bunny with a pancake on its head to prove my point?

I looked up good careers for my Chinese astrological sign (the rat). It says "stand up comedian." Since I obviously missed my calling, you're stuck with me here. I'm a "sit down" comedian here.

Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
after a month of conditioning / obtaining good bio I will think about type of fish. I would like to try the small discus . Have to wait and see if water is compatible with them. I think they may be a bit tricky to keep ( $50.-$100 apiece )
I like angel fish but never had good luck.
I love cichlids but didn't put gravel for them to move around. ( new house so I don't know my water hardness yet.. don't want to spend too much time on fussy water condition )
schooling fish are fun.
new dwarf ( smaller 3-4 inch ) plecos are adorable. ( might eat my plants)
Goldfish too messy but would look nice. ( also grow too big in this tank )
any ideas from more experienced tropical fish keepers?
( I can buy native Minnesota fish, but I don't think they would go for the genre of my tank. LOL I hate that over used word ! )

Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
Wouldn't you have to make sure its all Lead free crystal and such because it could leach stuff into the water otherwise? I honestly don't know just asking a question because I've always been worried about putting crystal into my aquariums because of that risk.

Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
I like, I like. That is a very cool idea that I might steal for myself at some point. Really though that is a cool way of going about it. As for the types of fish...I've always been one of those community tank people. I love the assortment of colors, shapes and personalities. As for your Pacs, Good Luck!

Re: Frogmom Breeding Project
If you're not experienced with sensitive fish, stay far away from Discus. You have to have your water parameters within pinpoint accuracy levels or you might as well just flush your money down the toilet. They are not tolerant of fluctuations at all.
Also since you're not using a bioactive substrate, look into buying some nitrifying bacteria to help the biofilter in the tank get going......if you use it properly you can add fish almost instantly after setting up a tank....no waiting around forever.
One & Only Nitrifying Bacteria
