Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
They can't cough, they sneeze, and will spew mucous. It's pretty gross.
Some of my snakes when they died spewed a thick, greenish/brown mucous that STANK. Almost like they had just rotted from the inside out. It was awful. I believe they were sick before I got them, as it was less than a week after I got them the first one died.
They hadn't shown any signs of being sick prior.
Some snakes don't show outward signs of an illness untill they are in the advanced stages.
Not a pretty sight.
Definitely needs some antibiotics, but I don't even know that would be enough. Find a GOOD reputable exotic vet and get it in fast.

Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
I hope that retic is being properly quarantined, because if that retic isn't being properly quarantined from your other snakes, then you may end up having more than just one problem.
I also would not get any more snakes from that breeder in the future, if I were you. Would you mind telling us who you got the retic from?

Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
*Update* I took "el demonio" to the vet where he was diagnosed with mild URI. He was given an injection of antibiotics as well as oral. It has cleared up nicely, and he back to being "el demonio que hace que los trofeos de los hombres"

Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
Hacking up bloody mucous doesn't seem like a "mild" RI to me... and I don't recall hearing RI's clearing up after just one or two dosages of antibiotics...

Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
Animals being animals always surprise you with new/different actions/results, that being said.... good reptile vets are hard to find.. so his diagnosis of "mild" can be very questionable, keep a real close tabs on him and be sure to quarantine him and watch your others closely and be sure to disinfect the cage and whole area. Here in Maine from what my exhaustive search turned up, we have only 1 reptile vet that is spoken of highly and he luckily for me is only 2hrs away where as for some people I know he is 12hrs away maybe more. Anyhow glad you got him to a vet who gave him antibiotics, please keep us posted on how he is doing just for personal knowledge & learning.

Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
He was given injections and oral antiboitics over the course of a week. And it was mild, because the "blood" actually came from him striking at the heatlamp guard and breaking a couple of his teeth off. And like I said, it has cleared up nicely, as I have yet to see any mucus balls from my friend.

Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
glad he's feeling better, but I don't believe that blood IN moucus as the pics clearly show would come from banging his face. there is no way. if that was tge case there may be blood spatter but not blood IN moucus. who knows how long he had been sick before you got him. and in all honesty I would be complaining to whoever you got him from. they didn't tell you that you were buying a sick snake.
as I said before my burm came with an RI. she was free so it's not like I paid for a "defective" animal. but still. she had JUST started sneezing up stuff the day before I took her to the vet and that was more then just a "mild RI"... she was on LARGE doses of medicine every other day for like a week, as well as being "baked"... and she got over hers. but I only had her a few days before she went to the doctor.

What's wrong with condensation? That it would be so wet in there that it would condense?

For the record, now I'm just worried I may be inadvertently doing something to induce respiratory issues, lol.

Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
snakes cannot cough and that is why they get such serious RI. chance shot out blood after her last surgery. it was from the anesthetic. i forgot what they do but it is not coughing. also when a snake has a RI you drop the humidity to really low and raise the heat.

Well, too much humidity/condensation can cause skin diseases too! (like hard to treat fungal infections....that happened to me with a ball python long ago).

Re: Lav tiger coughing up mucus with blood
I periodically ha ve to deal with RIs from recently captured water snakes. Raise temperature, drop humidity. Get the hot side into the low 90s. You also want to switch to a more absorbent substrate. Aspen bedding or carefresh work well. Sopping wet paper towels are a recipe for blister disease and subsequent sepsis.
Take the snake to a vet, they will probably prescribe Baytril or Tylan. You may be able to get Tylan OTC. You will need to look up dosing requirements. If the snake still eats, inject it into the food item. If not, force feeding works. If your snake does not cooperate, injection also works. To do the injection, take the syringe with the dose in it and inject in the upper third of the body, parallel to the spine under the skin. Not on the spine, but to the side of it.
