Uncommonly terrific!
.. common type of snake.. displayed in an uncommon fashion. 02/02/2012
.
I still get a kick out of seeing these big guys in nature.. Crotalus atrox. I know it's customary to see these dead and hung up or after they've been riled up and rattling and striking.. THIS is how I find them and how I've come to enjoy visiting with these great creatures. From today in Brownsville, Texas.
.

.

.
For those who want to know; temperatures were 74-76 (F) the sky was overcast and it was drizzling intermittently.. Here's a short (low rez) video of that animal as it was found.
.

.
These snakes are more than belts, hat bands or paperweights. Get to know a few and you'll agree.. Boycott the Roundups!

Re: Uncommonly terrific!
Hey thanks for your great comments..
.
There's nothing particularly risky about going looking for rattlesnakes. Though the shows on TV or the Carnival Roundups may want you to think so! I always say when some tough guy tells me of how many snakes he's killed .. so what? .. my niece could kill the biggest rattler living with my old five-iron! It's learning to live together that's tough..
.
I make no claim to being brave or whatever. These animals are just like any other.. they want their space and the resources to live. I've yet to feel threatened by animals I meet in nature.. I'm not especially tough! or naive. .. I watch what I'm doing and take care. If you don't feel comfortable interacting with these wild animals.. don't! But please don't perpetuate the idea that it's 'them against us' or any such nonsense.. That kind of thought has resulted in a lot of unnecessary strife and loss for many years.
.

.
Adios!

Re: Uncommonly terrific!
what makes the " rattle " noise ?
I found one dead along the highway once and I remember wanting to cut off the tail for the rattle. ( I was 20 yrs old camping at your Amarillo State Park )

Remember Poppit beads??? How they are linked together is similar to the way the snakes' keratin* (*just like Mr Nail ) segments hook together, and when they shake their tails (as many snakes do when nervous/agitated)
they vibrate SO rapidly that those links make a buzzing noise. And fyi, you cannot tell the age of the snake by counting them, since they wear out & break off just like our fingernails do. I have* a few rattles still from
when I kept rattlesnakes and their rattles would break off, especially when they got really long. About 18 segments was the longest any of mine had before they broke. That's probably why rattlesnakes seem so grumpy???
They are always breaking a "nail"!?! LOL!
I've never been tempted to remove a dead snakes rattle...but that's just me? What you left though may have been taken by the next person to come along...? You need to be really careful as to how long a rattlesnake is dead before trying to handle it, as some have been bitten by a reflex after death...maybe just their karma, lol....
